When we are trying to lose weight it can be so easy to realize that we have a physical and mental battle that we face. But really there is more to the battle of weight loss than just those. When it comes down to facing anything physically or mentally as Christians we must realize that there is a Spiritual Battle taking place too.
Finding time to evaluate your heart and relationship with the Lord and how you treat food, exercise and your health in general must be a priority.
God Created food to sustain us and for us to enjoy. But he did not create it for us to become gluttonous.
He did not create it to be our comforter.
He did not create it to consume our thoughts.
We need to desire God more than food!
Truths to Remember and Claim in Your Spiritual Battle to Lose Weight
You Were Created in God’s Image
Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:
What an amazing truth we need to claim! We were made in God’s image after HIS likeness.
Your Body is the Temple of the Lord
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost Which is in you and which ye have from God, and that ye are not your own. For ye were bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s.
Remember that you are a Child of the King! And that your body is His! He gave it to you and it is your responsibility to take care of it.
I love this quote!
Know You were Made Fearfully and Wonderfully
Psalm 139:14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and Wonderfully made: Marvelous are thy works.
You are beautiful especially to your Creator! No matter what your size, the number on the scale, God loves you and you need to love yourself on your weight loss journey. YOUR WORTH REST IN HIM not on how much you weigh. Your view of your self must be biblical of who you are in Christ. It wont matter how much you lose or weigh if you don’t have the right heart attitude and thoughts of who you are.
No Temptation is more than You can handle
1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted about that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Isn’t food such a common temptation to everyone? God will give you a way to escape the temptation. You have the strength to bear it. The strength to say no to what is not good for you.
Believe God gives You the Self-Control You Need
Galatians 5:16-26 (16)-This I say then, Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. (22-23) But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (Self-control) against such there is no law.
2 Timothy 1:7- For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power and of love and of sound mind (self-disciple/self-control)
God has given us what we need to have self-control but not in our own strength but through Him. He has called us to Walk in the Spirit and one of the fruits of the Spirit is self-control. Through His Spirit we can have the self-control we need to resist the temptation of food. The temptation to be lazy and not exercise. The temptation to not take care of ourselves.
Find Strength in the Lord
Ephesians 6:10- Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Proverbs 31: 17- She girdeth her loins with strength, And she strengtheneth her arms.
We can be strong in the Lord and his strength! Taking time to spend with the Lord in prayer and Bible Study will help us to stay strong in the Lord and to resist temptation throughout the day.
When we look at the Proverbs 31 woman one of the characteristic that describes her is one of strength. Physical strength comes from work-exercise. Kinda a neat example to see in the Bible!
Whatever you Do, Do it for the Lord
1 Corinthians 10:31- Whether therefore ye eat or drink or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
On your weight loss journey what is your reason? Is it to take care of yourself so that you can better server the Lord in the roles he has placed you? To take care of His temple? What ever you do it should be done for the Lord.
Keep God First
Exodus 20:3- Ye shall have no other God’s before me.
Philippians 3:19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthy things.
Is God first in your life? Has your belly come your God. Our desire should be to please the Lord. To walk closely with Him. To obey him because we love Him.
Eve was tempted and deceived because she gave in to her desires. She knew God’s truth but when her focus was taken off of God and put on to food (fall of man and first sin involved food) she sinned.
Our focus and desire must be for the Lord.
Made to Crave by Lysa Terkeurst is an excellent read about over coming her craving with food and changing her craving to desiring a closer relationship with the Lord. An excellent read for any Christian on a weight loss journey.
As you are on your journey of weight loss and health remember it is a Spiritual Battle too.
